Kahuna Pregnancy Massage is one of the most nurturing experiences available during pregnancy. It takes the signature "ocean wave" flow of Kahuna Bodywork and adapts it to support the unique physical and emotional shifts of pregnancy. Unlike standard pregnancy massages that might use a "tummy-hole" pillow (which can sometimes strain the lower back), the Kahuna Pregnancy Massage is usually performed in a side-lying position. The practitioner works on one side of your body at a time, using long, sweeping forearm strokes from your ankle all the way to your shoulder. Because Kahuna work is inherently about space - creating space in the joints, the mind, and the spirit - it is a perfect fit for a body that is literally expanding to make space for new life.
Connect:
Our fast-paced lives make it difficult for us to appreciate and process the changes associated with pregnancy. The Kahuna pregnancy massage (also referred to as the Goddess Massage, by some) can give you permission to slow down and reconnect with yourself, as well as to honour the changes you are going through as you grow a new life inside you, while perhaps also gently connecting with that new life.
Lymphatic Drainage:
The rhythmic, upward strokes work well for moving excess fluid and reducing swelling (edema) in the ankles and hands.
Pelvic Release:
The Kahuna practitioner uses gentle, rhythmic rocking of the hips to release tension in the lower back and sacroiliac (SI) joints without using jarring force.
Oil Conditioning:
Because Kahuna work uses a lot of oil, your skin (which can get itchy and dry as it stretches during pregnancy) will feel hydrated and supple after your massage.
The "haaa" Breath:
You may be encouraged to use "haaa" breathing (the Hawaiian breath of life) to stay present and relaxed.
Safety:
Your Kahuna practitioner is trained to ensure your safety and the safety of your baby, and will avoid deep pressure on certain acupressure points (like the ankles or the webbing of the hand) that are traditionally associated with inducing labor.
